For our hymn this week, we learned Trust and Obey. I asked the kids afterward how they can know whether they are obeying God or not. We talked about how God wants them to obey mommy and daddy, and then they can know they are obeying Him! Big C said that some mornings he decides he wants to obey all day long, but he always finds that it is impossible. He promised that he would try really hard to obey all day long today, but he was certain that he wouldn’t be able to do it!
His honesty was sweet and refreshing. We reminded him that he certainly should be trying to obey all day long, but when he fails he can come to us and repent, find forgiveness, and start again. None of us can obey the impossible standard of perfect obedience, and that is why we need God’s grace. Nevertheless, all of us should be striving to be more like Christ, who was obedient unto death. “Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.” Heb. 12: 3-4
